How to Identify PS5 DualSense Controller Version

Since its debut in November 2020, the PS5 DualSense controller has undergone five hardware updates — we'll call them V1, V2, V3, V4, and V5.

The model number of the PS5 DualSense controller (V1, V2, V3, V4 and V5) is CFI-ZCT1W.

But each version has slight hardware adjustments. Here are a few ways to identify the controller version without disassembling the machine.

PS5 Controller Calibration Website*

The easiest way to identify the version of a PS5 controller is by using the PS5 controller calibration website:
https://dualshock-tools.github.io/

Step 1: Open the calibration website on your computer and connect the controller to the computer using a USB cable.

Step 2: Click "Connect", select "DualSense wireless controller", then click "Connect" again.

Step 3: Once the page displays the controller information, find the mainboard model number, such as BDM-040 — the number 4 at the end indicates it is version V4.

Find the serial number

The serial number of your DualSense wireless controller is the key to identifying versions V1, V2, V3, V4, and V5.

The serial number is located in two places:

  • QR code on the back

Scan the QR code on the back of the DualSense wireless controller to view the serial number, which has 17 alphanumeric characters. Use a suitable QR code scanning tool to scan.
Note: Some built-in QR code scanners (such as the one integrated into the iPhone Camera app) will not work, and you may need a 3rd party app.

  • Full serial number on the back

The full serial number is printed in this text below the QR code. Look near "Made in China" - it usually starts with a letter, such as E, F, or G. The first number after the letter is the controller version: 1 is V1, 2 is V2, 3 is V3, 4 is V4, and 5 is V5.
For example, in serial number F32700T6K11799146, the second digit is "4", indicating that this is a V4 controller.

Internal Hardware Differences

While all DualSense controllers have the same external dimensions, the internal components differ between versions in the following ways:

Internal Hardware Differences

While all DualSense controllers have the same external dimensions, the internal components differ between versions in the following ways:

  • Motherboard

Each version of the motherboard has a slightly updated design and is uniquely identified on the PCB:

V1: BDM-010
V2: BDM-020
V3: BDM-030
V4: BDM-040
V5: BDM-050

  • Triggers

Starting with the V3, the adaptive trigger mechanism design is more integrated, while the V1 and V2 adopt a modular design with different numbers of built-in fixing screws.

Summary

By looking for the serial number and paying attention to its second digit, you can quickly determine the version of the DualSense controller you have. In addition, the internal motherboard and trigger design also provide further differentiation between different versions. I hope this guide can help you better understand and identify your controller version.
